Women friends

The sense of connection and being able to rely on one another is of paramount importance in friendships. Of course, this is not exclusive to eldest daughters. Friendship between women is something to cherish. A friend offers a safe haven in a world that can be fraught with peril. Research confirms that strong friendships exert a positive effect on our health. Sharing your life with other people offers a buffer against stress. The support that you give one another is especially significant, whether that is on the emotional level when you pour your heart out over the break-up of your relationship, or rather more practical when others help you to paint a room or recommend a babysitter you can safely entrust your child to.

Friends are so important to us because generally speaking women understand each other better than men understand women. The mere idea that you can call a friend in an emergency feels supportive. It has even been shown that Dutch women find it harder to picture a life without their women friends than without a partner. Whom to call when divorce looms? What to do when you are exhausted from caring for your aging parents? Or when you tremble now that you have been promoted to the high position everyone else knows you will have no trouble managing? With a friend you can take off your mask. Fears, insecurities, your shadow side – all is welcome here. According to Verena Kast it is incredibly important for women to have a place where they can be themselves. Where they are not afraid that they will be misunderstood or scorned. Where they will not be immediately rebuked, where they can peacefully try to find out what exactly it is that they want.
